Lesson:  Ceramic Houses

Objectives:

The Student will:

Production:  Design and elevation and facade drawing of an architectural structure. Create a ceramic house based on the design.

Art History:  Identify architectural styles and elements noted in Charleston scenery.

Aesthetics:  Analyze and reflect on their work and the work of others.

Art Criticism:  Discuss and evaluate their work and the work of others.

South Carolina Visual Arts Standards Addressed:

Standard 1: The student will demonstrate competence in the use of ideas,
materials, techniques, and processes in the creation of works of
visual art.  VA7-1.3 Select and apply the most effective materials, techniques, and processes to communicate his or her experiences and ideas through the artworks.

Standard 2: The student will use composition and the elements and principles
of design to communicate ideas.  VA7-2.3 Select the elements and principles of design to create artworks with a personal meaning.

Standard 3: The student will examine the content of works of visual art and use
elements from them in creating his or her own works.  VA7-3.3 Discuss the ways that choices of subject matter, symbols, and ideas combine to communicate meaning in his or her works of visual art.

Standard 4: The student will understand the visual arts in relation to history and
world cultures and the technologies, tools, and materials used by
artists.  VA7-4.3 Demonstrate visual literacy by deconstructing works of visual art to identify and discuss the elements and principles of design that are used in them.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.7.1 Engage in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.7.1c Pose questions that elicit elaboration and respond to others’ questions and comments with relevant observations and ideas that bring the discussion back on topic as needed.

Alternative Lessons:

Scale Models:  Students create scale models from their elevations drawings and floor plans using cardboard.

Whimsical Houses:  Students created Popular Culture houses from clay.
